Grind size matters

Grind size is one of the variables we can control, whether we grind the coffee ourselves or buy it pre-ground. It affects how easily water moves through the coffee and, in turn, how the cup tastes.

Grinders usually have a range of settings, but the numbers aren’t universal. It’s better to understand the texture of the coffee rather than rely only on the number.

Very fine grounds feel like talcum powder, fine grounds resemble table salt, medium grounds are closer to sand, and coarse grounds are like rough sea salt. Finer grounds generally slow the water down and extract more, while coarser grounds allow water to pass through more easily.
