Rufscript, new font released
Partial Screen Shot of gnu.org with rufscript as font, in firefox. For more screen shots see here.
Making a font from others handwriting is more to experiment than fun. And what it made so thrill is that, all the glyphs for making of the font are captured from her note book, without her knowledge. My K750 worked as the capturing machine. The font is licensed under GNU GPL version 3 + Font Exception.
Here is the font as ttf and here is its source sfd.
The font is compiled and designed in the latest stable version of fontforge, (20080927, available as tarball at sourceforge).I remember Steve of freefont saying that the sfd created by new version fontforge is unreadable to its older versions.
Specifications :
Font Name – Rufscript
Emsize – 2048
Acent : Decent value – 1639 : 409
Contains – Unicode Rage Basic Latin [95/95]
Tools used – Fontforge, Inkscape, GIMP, gedit
Thanks list :
- Lithu, whose handwriting is now turned into this font, for writing notes in class hours.
- Hussain K H and Suresh P, who made me a font designer.
- Classmates specially Kiran, Sheen, Lalu and Chinnu who were so eager to see the font completed.
- To friends in FOSS, specially anivar, who used the alpha version rufscript to design his blog.
- IRC channels mates at #smc-project, #fedora-art, ##fonts (all in freenode).
- Niyam, Rahul Bhalerao who loved this work and suggested many modifications.
- To Sony Ericsson for providing a wonderful mobile camera and DELL for the laptop I am using.
Wanna your handwriting to decorate your computer – for very hadwritting font contact me!
PS : I love to make the deb / rpm package of it, should I or will someone?

It looks great, Hiran.
Congrats.
Looks Great!
Thanks for the font

Please do more creative works like these.
This is wonderful! Thank you so much!
I can see this making a really nice comic strip font – I have it installed right now.
thankyou soo much hiran…to see my handwriting as a font..!!
…and sorry for showing the least interest in releasing the font..
..the most beautiful birthday present(s) i ever received..thnkyou
Beautiful handwritten font.
Thank You,

Great work! Out of curiousity, why not Open Font License?
@sankarshan, i am trying. just lagging due to tight exam schedule
@mizmo, thanks for putting a post on the font and adding to fedora wish list
@lithu,
@alexandre, well, i am not against using ofl, what i support is freedom and i like the gpl license. hence i used that. if its a need we could make it dual licensed,
happy?
@others thanks a ton!!!
Good work.
OFL is a completely free font license and unlike the GPL is specifically designed to match the need of font designers. I would recommend switching from GPL to OFL for that reason.
http://openfontlibrary.org/wiki/Font_Licensing#SIL_OFL
Dual licensing has the danger that a fork based on one of the license cannot be merged back without losing the duality.
Quick followup. I have submitted a review request for Fedora at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467507
Spec file and source rpm available. For any further questions, feel free to drop in a mail to sundaram AT fedoraproject.org. Thanks.
Love it!
I went ahead and took a shot at a debian package.
Ubuntu Hardy and Intrepid packages can be found in my ppa:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~andrewsomething/+archive
Here’s a direct link to the deb:
https://edge.launchpad.net/%7Eandrewsomething/+archive/+files/ttf-rufscript_010-1~ppa1_all.deb
This is my first time packaging a font, so any comments would be appreciated. It becomes usable in OpenOffice, ect immediately on install but to use on the desktop it seems Gnome needs to be restarted. I don’t know if that’s normal.
Please don’t switch to the OFL, it is a terrible license for anyone who cares about software freedom.
Cool work!
@rahul sundaram, thanks for making the rpm
@andrew, thanks for the deb package
@pramode sir, thanks a ton for posting about the font
I am really surprised for the reactions I am getting.
Feels thrilled!
Looks great…. Beautiful handwriting
Great buddy.. BTW, nice handwriting too..
Vivek.
Wow!
Superb !! You are the man !
Lets keep it under GPLv3.
Cool work..am lovin it…
congrts mate……

+font exception, praveen
we all are gpl v3 guys..
actually there is a story.. how i came to free software.. i was 11th standard, it was from my sisters friend, who is a student of pramode sir, i got a game called icebreaker…..it was for windows, and along with the setup it contained another folder named src which contained the source code in c and the gpl license. Reading that file (as those c files was not “readable” for me) made to to think of gnu/linux and becoming a free software guy! So this is my time give something back to that license!
others, thanks!

@andrew,
I don’t know much about how donts are packaged but here is one mistake in yoru package. Your debian/rules contains target ‘install/ttf-nafees’ which I guess should be ‘install/ttf-rufscript’. Also there is no copyright or license file provided by upstream. And you may want to trim down the debian/copyright file since GPLv3 is available in /usr/share/common-licenses/
By the way the font was available for me immediately after install on intrepid.
@hiren,
Great work. The font really looks nice in some part of the desktop.
http://picasaweb.google.com/onkarshinde/Misc#5258497109705719218
Enjoy the moment.Congrats on the wonderful font.
Best wishes for your exams.
Good work, keep doing
If any danes are listening. I’ve forked the font and tried to add our special danish characters to the font, so we can use it also:
http://awen.dk/artwork/rufscript/
You should really put the font in some sort of VCS to let other people aid in adding their special characters.
really nice font, thank you!
Hiran
While your font looks very good and is very useful when using it for the English language it is not of any good use while using the German language, because you forgot to implement the German “Umlaute”, that is: üöäßÜÖÄ.
Maybe you can implement the missing letters in your next release.
Dieter
This font is awesome!
I want to join the requests for more characters (beside the German ones, if you could add the Catalan “ç” and accents that would be great!).
Really a wonderful font. Nice, sharp, easy to read. Congratulations and thanks for your present
Unfortunately there are a lot of missing characters. It is not possible to use this font for writing in Catalan, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish, German or Esperanto for example.
Among the missing characters are: all vowels with the 3 accents (‘,` and ^), with the ~ ,with the umlaut (“) and with º. The German character ß (upper and lowercase), the Catalan and French character ç (upper and lowercase), the Spanish character ñ (upper and lowercase), the Dänish characters ø and æ (upper and lowercase) and nearly all special characters of Esperanto.
To know how do this missing characters look like, preview a font like bitstream vera with a font editor.
Best regards,
Francesc Dorca
@ Andreas Wenning
There is no requirement of a fork, i will soon make version control repo. Any one who is interested to design more glyphs can work over the font. Actually, I don’t know which are the most required Latin glyphs other than this 95 I have designed. Tell me I will work on them!
@Others
I am feeling excited, really am excited and thrilled over the reception of font.
Thanks for using them, thanks for posts about the font.
Any suggestions are welcomed. and soon a project setup will be made for the fonts
This reception is quite unexpected!
superb work … i loved it
Hey guys how to install on my fedora 9 box….
@hiran
It was also mostly for personal use, until the VCS got up and running. And you can’t wait sharing it.
And thanks again for a beautiful font!
Really great work! I’ve installed it right after reading the original post. Further I notice that the font doesn’t support the special characters used in Portuguese (I’m Brazilian). I’ll anxiously wait for the next releases. Hope I could have tech skills to help you with this.
Congratulations and good luck with the exams!
This is indeed a great font. Unfortunately, the lack of accents makes it unusable for, I think, any language except English.
hi,
forgot to comment though i used it!
Fantastic, next let us try to add some Mal chars(not so soon we can wait!)
cheers
These are truly beautiful!!!
A quick update on the debian package. The Debian ITP report has been filed:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=502645
And the packaging has been committed to the debian pkg-fonts project’s svn repository, so hopefully it will be uploaded to unstable soon.
Hi,
Please give me tutorials and guides on making Tamil fonts.
Thanks.
Hi Buddy,
Nice font.. and good work
Cheers,
@Hiran,
Awesome work buddy and thanks for such a wonderful font. Lot of design people at my workplace felt it is one of the cleanest fonts they’ve seen and have started using it around right away. Now, don’t be surprised to see your font being used if you happen to visit a kiosk in rural Karnataka
gr888 work!!!!!
Nice Fonts!
Awesome man.. !!
Cool work Hiran. Keep it under GPLV3 and later
I installed the font, it’s beautiful! Thank you.
Unfortunately, accentuated characters do not look right. Hopefully accents can be added to the font in the next releases to make it perfect. I miss at least the accents for French (à â ä æ ç è é ê ë î ï ô œ ù û ü ÿ), Italian (à é è ì ò ó ù) and Esperanto (ĉ ĝ ĥ ĵ ŝ ŭ) in both lower case and upper case. The French quotes would be nice as well « ».
Great work da…. Congrats and Thanks…
@ Jinesh,
Adding Malayalam to this font is like a comedy, it cannot be done. Adding another 1600 glyphs that too based on an English design, you wont love it. Instead I am working over a Malayalam handwriting pattern font, which may take time for the release. Its a secret, don’t share with others
Thanks to all who bloged about and comment and is using the font. I have received the status of missing characters from these comment. I will look into it after having discussion with other font designing friends, sooner.
Another request for extendend accents support (áéíóúüñç) for spanish language.
Also I see a very apreciable red and green color bleeding when rendering on my lapton, with subpixel aliasing. Maybe is a problem with kerning optimization? If you need it, ask for a screenshot.
Fontforge rejects the SFD-font Rufscript, so I can’t generate a truetype or type 1 version. Are these available somewhere as plain files (untarred, unzipped, un-whatever)?
Thanks,
@Bisho, mail me the screenshot
@Luc, please use the latest fontforge for getting the sfd workable. Old fontforge “wont” read the files by new.
I installed fontforge_full-20080110 (20 days old!),
and I still get a message that the file Rufscript is damaged.
Luc
@Luc,
It confuses me. are you playing with the same http://hiran.in/content/fonts/rufscript/src/Rufscript010.sfd ? Its not having any issues. Well, try open the font using fontforge, that may work.
Yes. Just tried that new version as well.
I am on Mac OS X, running X11 and tcsh.
Luc
Nice Work Hiran….
Please check the small letter “u”….
I feel a small problem with the shape, when I tried to write my name, in large size(72 or greater) in OpenOffice…
beautiful! this is a nice legible font with a lot of personality. its typographic color is strong. it forms good textures in running display text. excellent!
This is the classis Hungarian test:

Thanks all! Thanks for the comments, the version with other glyphs will be made soon…

How can we install this font in a Mac? Is there any ttf or otf version of the file?
Another vote for “Please Add Extended Latin A” support (I need Esperanto, Polish, vowels with macrons, etc).

I would like to share with you a link to your site

@Hiran,
WOW! Congratulations on a job well done! I’ve been using your Rufscript font system-wide on my desktop for months now and recently installed it on my newly acquired used laptop. I get compliments often. People just simply admire the work you’ve done and ask where they can get it …with excitement! Of course I direct them here or to the Ubuntu Linux repository. Thank you for your time and effort to create such a beautiful handwritten font and sharing it with the world. Outstanding!!!
@Lithu,
Hiran couldn’t have picked a better example for this task than “your” handwriting. Thank you for allowing Hiran to use it as a template for his project and as well, sharing it with the world. What a story to tell your children and grandchildren when the time comes!! No doubt your proud with the finished result, …and rightfully so! Congratulations for being the honored lucky one who’s handwriting is literally used all over the world now. Your one of few to hold this honor.
Regards,
Visible Spirit
Great buddy , Good work keep it up.. i wish I would do it
Well i was surfing the net last week and i cant believe what i saw . I actually found my ex-girlfriend naked on some website! Ill be honest, i was pretty dumb founded to find her in a picture of girls making out. I just dont get why she would let someone take a picture of her doing that. I then bought a membership and found her taking self pictures of herself. That whole site is full of amateur girls taking selfpics. I also seen Girls Caught Peeing while drunk! Anyways, any of you guys ever find an ex-girlfriend on these type of sites? Its pretty shocking
nice cms layout. just the heading could require some modding
hm is it a generated template?
anyways i should stop to chat, just though i’ll let you know.
Haha I am honestly the only comment to this great post!
